Androgenic hair

What is Androgenic hair?

It refers to the terminal hair or body hair that arises on the human body at the time of puberty and after it. Both men and women have this type of hair. However, men generally have a higher level of androgen than women. It is due to this reason that Androgenic hair is more visible in males as compared to females.

Such hairs typically arise around the time of puberty. The amount of these hairs tends to reduce in the later years as a person ages. This may be due to a reduction in the amount of Androgenic hormone in the body, poor circulation or some other reasons.

Androgenic hair Location

This type of hair can arise in various regions of the body, in both men and women. Such areas include:

  • Face
  • Chest
  • Arm
  • Abdomen
  • Back
  • Leg
  • Axillary areas
  • Buttocks
  • Foot
  • Perianal areas
  • Periareolar regions
  • Above the lip

In women as well as in a few men, a few strands of such hairs can be noted around the nipples.

Androgenic hair Function

These hairs provide input about tactile sensation to the sensory nerves located within the skin via vibration and movement. The follicular nerves detect distortions and vibration of the skin surrounding the follicles. This type of hair also extends the touch sensation beyond the skin surface to space and air surrounding it. It thus helps detect movement of air and displacement of hair on coming in contact with objects or insects.
