Right lymphatic duct Definition

It refers to either of the terminal lymphatic vessels. It is the equivalent of the thoracic duct in the right side of the body. The structure was first discovered by Nicolas Steno, also known as the father of geology.

Right lymphatic duct Anatomy

It is created by the merger of the vessels of the lymph nodes (of the right upper limb, both lungs and thoracic wall) and the right jugular lymphatic vessel. It is short and around 1.2 cm (12 mm) in length.

It is one of the means for transportation of lymph, a fluid that contains lymphocytes which are vital for bodily functions and make up an important part of immune system. The duct drains lymph from various sections of the body, such as the right arm and the upper right area of the trunk. It also helps the immune system by destroying harmful bacteria (pathogens). The duct is also responsible for filtering waste products to allow the lymph to return safely to the circulatory system.
