Zona glomerulosa Definition

It is the outermost level of the adrenal cortex or the cortex of the suprarenal gland. The other two layers of the adrenal cortex beneath the glomerulosa are Zona fasciculata and Zona reticularis.

Zona glomerulosa Location

It lies directly under the capsule of the adrenal gland.

Zona glomerulosa Appearance

It is narrow in shape. The cells of the structure are arranged in arches or clusters and are ovoid in appearance.

Zona glomerulosa Function

It secretes the hormone aldosterone into the bloodstream which regulates the balance of salt and water in the body. The secretion occurs in response to rise in potassium levels. Actually, it produces a variety of enzymes that transform Pregnenolone to Aldesterone through a series of important steps.
